Stephenville has a strong, diversified economic basis. Agriculture is the leading industry, contributing approximately $200 million to the economy. Tarleton State University
Tarleton State University was founded in 1899 as John Tarleton College. In 1917, the college became a member of The Texas A&M University System. Tarleton gained official status as a university in 1973. The university has experienced considerable growth during the past decade, with current enrollment exceeding 6,333. Students come from more than 200 Texas counties, as well as 30 states and 10 foreign countries. Harris Methodist Erath County
Harris Methodist Erath County is a licensed 98-bed hospital located in Stephenville. Harris Methodist Erath County provides services in Family Practice, Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics, Cardiology, General Surgery, Orthopedics, Ear-Nose-Throat, Ophthalmolgoy, Urology, Radiology, Lithotripsy, Sports/Industrial Rehab, Physical Therapy, Nuclear Medicine, CT Scanner, and MRI. The surgical procedures also include laproscopic and laser in certain areas.

Orthopedic Surgery
Dr. F. James Herbertson, nationally known orthopedic surgeon, specializes in medicine relating to the care of the bones and joints as well as other related structures such as nerves, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. He is involved with treatment of fractures, reconstructive surgery for arthritis (i.e. total joint replacements), evaluation and treatment of athletic injuries.

Dental
Stephenville is well-served in the dental area. Twelve dentists practice in Stephenville. In addition to basic dental care, oral surgery and orthodontist care can be found in the city.

Stephenville Medical and Surgical Clinic
Stephenville Medical and Surgical Clinic is a multi-specialty group practice dedicated to providing complete medical care and preventive medicine. The clinic staff has 26 physicians on staff as well as one physicians assistant, two nurse practitioners and a registered dietitian.
